Concealed carry holder was involved in fatal Lincoln Park bar strip shooting, CPD report says

New details have emerged in the fatal shooting of a man during a brawl outside a Lincoln Park bar Sunday night, the second shooting since June along the same nightlife strip where neighbors have been demanding that the city take action.

At about 11:43 p.m., 30-year-old Malik McCorkle was shot and killed in the 2200 block of North Lincoln Avenue. A Chicago police report reviewed by CWB Chicago indicates that two shooters were involved.

Ald. Timmy Knudsen (43rd) said a fight broke out at a nearby bar and spilled onto the street. McCorkle and two men were involved in an altercation when the two men pulled guns and shot McCorkle, striking him in the head and body, according to the police report.

Officers responding to 911 calls arrived quickly and found McCorkle lying outside a nearby bank. They administered CPR until paramedics arrived and took him to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he died a short time later, police said. Officers recovered one firearm at the scene and found about 12 shell casings near McCorkle, according to police. It was unclear who had possession of the recovered firearm during the altercation.

Witnesses told police that several men fled the area after the shooting, some on foot and others in a car. About 45 minutes after the shooting, a 25-year-old concealed carry holder returned to the scene, surrendered his firearm to police and told officers he was involved in the shooting, the police report said. Officers took him into custody. The second suspected shooter had not returned, and police were continuing to look for him.

On Monday, Knudsen said his office has been leading an “aggressive push for further restrictions on late night bars on this stretch of Lincoln Avenue” since another shooting left a 39-year-old woman critically injured just steps from Sunday’s shooting scene on June 7.

“I am hopeful and confident that the Department of Business Affairs & Consumer Protection will view this homicide as sufficient evidence of the need to support specific restrictions on this stretch,” Knudsen said. He added that CPD would add “a permanent patrol on weekend hours” to the Lincoln Avenue bar strip.
