A GOON & A GUN: Feds Charge “Uptown Beach Bandit”

Federal investigators have now identified 45-year-old Cynthia Wonsey of Edgewater as the woman they believe to be the “Uptown Beach Bandit” bank robber.

Wonsey is charged with one count of bank robbery in connection with the hold-up of a TCF Bank branch in Boystown on August 5.

She is also suspected of robbing two other TCF Banks on the North Side last month.

Prosecutors say Wonsey approached the TCF Bank counter inside of the Jewel-Osco store at 3531 N. Broadway and tossed a demand note at the teller:

“Give me all your $100s $50s and $20’s. I DO HAVE A GUN and I have a goon watching from the other aisle and HE HAS A GUN. So don’t press any buttons put it in the envelope and nobody gets hurt! Now! And don’t move for five mins after I leave. Look you are being watched! 30 Seconds.”

Wonsey fled with $553 cash and a tracking device that malfunctioned.

Two acquaintances of Wonsey called the FBI after seeing published photos of the bank robbery suspect.

CWB Chicago first reported the arrest of a suspect in the case on Saturday morning.

CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas. But our mission remains unchanged: To provide original public safety reporting with better context and greater detail than mainstream media outlets. Our editorial email address is news@cwbchicago.com
