A 75-year-old woman was knocked to the ground by two men who tried to steal her purse as she entered her Gold Coast home on Wednesday afternoon, police said. The attack unfolded one day after an 85-year-old woman was slammed to the ground by a man who stole her purse as she entered her condo building in Streeterville. Police have not publicly linked the two crimes.
In the new case, two men approached the victim and grabbed her purse as she entered her residence on the first block of East Cedar at 4:16 p.m., CPD spokesperson Karie James said. The woman was knocked down, but managed to regain control of her purse. She was not seriously injured. Both offenders jumped into a vehicle and drove away, James said.
The robbers, described as two Black men between 40- and 45-years-old, fled in a Lincoln MKX that bears either a temporary license plate or a yellow out-of-state plate, according to James.
Area Three detectives are investigating the case.
On Tuesday morning, a man followed an elderly woman to the rear entrance of her Mag Mile condo building and flung her to the ground as he wrestled away her purse. That victim struck her head on the pavement and was recovering at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The attack was captured on video and police subsequently released CTA surveillance images of the attacker entering a nearby Red Line station.
Police have not publicly linked the two cases.
