Carjackers are responsible for shooting a man behind the victim’s Bucktown home early Tuesday, police sources have confirmed. And the incident was captured on video.
CPD didn’t tell the media that the shooting on the 1800 block of North Marshfield happened during a carjacking attempt — but CWBChicago reported that detail exclusively on Tuesday morning. Now, that information has been confirmed by video and a Facebook post that the victim’s wife shared with neighbors.
The carjackers who shot the man arrived in a red Audi that police believe they took from a woman in Lakeview on Monday evening. They are also suspected of pulling off another robbery in Logan Square shortly before the shooting.
In her Facebook post, the shooting victim’s wife thanked neighbors for an “overwhelming” outpouring of support that she and her family have received since the crime.
The woman told the group members that she was returning home from picking up her daughter at Midway airport when she stopped in the alley behind the family home shortly after midnight Tuesday. As she popped the trunk to get her daughter’s suitcase out, the red Audi pulled up behind them.
Two men got out of the Audi, grabbed her daughter, and held the daughter at gunpoint, she said. They then pulled the woman from the car and ordered the two victims to get on the ground.
“I was concerned they were going to hurt us, so I wasn’t inclined to do this,” the woman said. She had already given the men her keys, wallet, purse, and phone.
That’s when the woman’s husband came running out of the house. One of the carjackers panicked and shot him, she said.
Both carjackers returned to the red Audi, which sped from the scene.
A nearby surveillance camera captured most of the robbery. CWBChicago is not posting the footage because the victim expressed concern that doing so might not be in the investigation’s best interest.
She said her husband, who was shot in the arm, had been scheduled for surgery.
