Drive-by gunman opens fire on family gathering in Avondale; 1 injured

A 39-year-old man was seriously injured Saturday evening when a drive-by shooter opened fire on a family gathering in Avondale, police said. No arrests have been made.

The group was gathered outside a family member’s home in the 2800 block of West Wellington when a dark-colored sedan rolled up and men began yelling gang slogans and shooting from inside the vehicle around 11:37 p.m., according to police.

One bullet struck the victim in his abdomen while other rounds struck the family’s home. The injured man was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center in serious condition.

Area Five detectives are investigating.
