Suburban man charged with murder for intentionally driving over a pedestrian in the West Loop, police say

Joseph Verdone | CPD

A Hillside man intentionally drove onto a sidewalk in the 100 block of North Ogden and killed a 22-year-old Edgewater man in the West Loop on Sunday, Chicago police said.

Enrique Martinez was walking south on the sidewalk when a dark-colored sedan struck him around 5:15 a.m. Sunday, officials said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

On Thursday, Joseph Verdone, 25, was charged with first-degree murder.

Chicago police have released few details about the alleged crime, but the department quickly told the public that it believed Martinez’s death was a murder. More information about the case will be made public during Verdone’s bail hearing on Friday afternoon. CWBChicago will post a full report of Verdone’s court appearance after it concludes.

CWBChicago was created in 2013 by five residents of Wrigleyville and Boystown who had grown disheartened with inaccurate information that was being provided at local Community Policing (CAPS) meetings. Our coverage area has expanded since then to cover Lincoln Park, River North, The Loop, Uptown, and other North Side Areas. But our mission remains unchanged: To provide original public safety reporting with better context and greater detail than mainstream media outlets. Our editorial email address is news@cwbchicago.com
