Man shot in River North overnight

CHICAGO — A man is recovering after a drive-by gunman shot him in River North overnight.

The 29-year-old victim was standing in the drive-thru of Portillo’s on the 600 block of North Clark when the gunman began shooting around 3:14 a.m., according to witnesses. Portillo’s was closed at the time, but a crowd was leaving a nearby nightclub at the time of the crime.

A driver took the victim to Rush University Medical Center for treatment of a gunshot wound to his leg. Police said he was in good condition.

Witnesses said the shots were fired from a black or dark gray Jeep Grand Cherokee that fled south on Clark Street.

So far this year, ten people have been shot on the Near North Side. That includes a Chicago police officer and a suspected burglar who exchanged gunfire near the Magnificent Mile on January 8. Near North shooting totals as of June 9 in recent years:
