CHICAGO — A parolee is charged with attempted murder, accused of shooting at two men as they ran away from a murder scene near the Howard CTA station. Both of the men Kevin Hume allegedly shot toward also face charges in connection with the October 23 shooting in the 1600 block of West Howard.
The entire episode was captured on video, which we share below.

According to complaints and detention petitions filed against the three men, Latrell Reynolds, 20, and Clifford Murphy, 18, were walking east on Howard Street when 29-year-old Marlon Scott approached them around 3 p.m. The encounter quickly turned physical, with all three men brawling on the sidewalk.
Within seconds, the men identified as Reynolds and Murphy rose to their feet and continued heading east as Scott remained on the sidewalk, mortally wounded. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
While that all happened, a man identified as Hume was sitting outside a storefront nearby. As a woman with a baby stroller tried to maneuver away from the altercation unfolding ahead of her, the man identified as Hume appeared to retrieve a firearm, which he fired toward the fleeing men. Prosecutors said Reynolds and Murphy were also shot during or immediately after the altercation.
Here is the video footage, which we have partly pixelated to conceal Scott lying on the sidewalk.
Prosecutors said Reynolds suffered gunshot wounds to his shoulder and leg. They said he admitted to having a firearm, which video surveillance allegedly showed him ditching as he entered a getaway car. He is charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and aggravated battery in a public place.
After the altercation, Murphy was found outside nearby Gale Elementary School with a through-and-through gunshot wound that entered his back and exited his chest, officials said.
Cops allegedly found a handgun tucked in his waistband. Police said the gun was not loaded, but it was equipped with an auto-fire switch, rendering it capable of firing multiple rounds with a single trigger pull. He is charged with unlawful use of a machine gun.
Hume is accused of shooting Murphy in the back as he fled. He’s charged with attempted first-degree murder, aggravated battery by discharging a firearm, aggravated discharge of a firearm, and unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.
Judge Caroline Glennon Goodman granted the state’s detention petition for Hume. Judge Deidre Dyer denied the petition for Reynolds and released him on electronic monitoring. Judge Anthony Calabrese rejected the detention petition filed in Murphy’s case and released him to await trial.
Hume is on parole for violating an order of protection. He has a previous conviction for being a felon in possession of a firearm in 2002. He was also convicted of felony narcotics charges four times between 1996 and 2002, according to Illinois Department of Corrections records.
No one is charged with shooting or killing Marlon Scott.
Chicago police records show that 20 people have been shot in the 1600 block of West Howard over the past two years. Charges have been filed in only one other case. Two men, Lamont Vaughn and Brandon Henry are charged with firing shots during altercations on the block that did not result in injuries.
Editor’s note: No mugshot is currently available for Murphy.
