Witnesses uncooperative after gunman kills victim on River North sidewalk

CHICAGO — Witnesses were uncooperative after a man was shot and killed during an argument on a River North sidewalk overnight. The gunman remains at large. (Social media video here.)

Chicago cops were less than a block away when the shooting occurred in the 500 block of North Franklin at 3:15 a.m. They immediately called out shots fired and quickly found the 31-year-old victim. He had suffered seven gunshot wounds, according to an officer at the scene.

In a media statement, CPD said the victim and another man had an argument that turned physical before the offender pulled out a gun and fired several shots, striking the victim in the chest.

The gunman escaped on foot, police said, but CPD did not release a suspect description.

Officers stopped four men about two blocks from the shooting scene, but witnesses refused to cooperate with the investigation by verifying if any of the men were involved in the shooting, police said. One of the four men was arrested for a warrant. Police released the other three after collecting their identifying information.

The victim is the third person shot in River North this year and the second to die from their injuries. Both of the previous victims were shot during a single incident at a hotel in the 300 block of West Grand on February 22. Charges have been filed in that case.
