Same shirt, same shoes: mugshot from earlier arrest helped crack CTA robbery cases, prosecutors say

A CTA rider who tracked his stolen iPhone to a Joliet address helped Chicago police unravel a pair of transit robberies that prosecutors say were committed by a repeat offender already on felony pretrial release. Alphanso Carter, 34, is charged with two counts of robbery in connection with separate robberies that occurred within about 30 minutes of each other nearly a year ago, according to prosecutors.

Mayor says study proves police respond faster without ShotSpotter. The study excluded gunfire calls.

A University of Chicago study being used to defend the city’s decision to disconnect its gunfire detection network excluded all shots-fired calls from its analysis — the only type of call ShotSpotter was ever involved in. The study also compared spring and summer response times to fall and winter ones, raising questions about whether any improvement was seasonal rather than the result of cutting the system. Underlying city data reliability is another concern, after a 2023 watchdog report found CPD couldn’t consistently track when officers arrived on scene.
