A CTA train operator was struck by flying glass Sunday morning when a shootout among occupants of three vehicles on the Dan Ryan Expressway sent a bullet through the window of his train car, according to Chicago police officers who responded to the scene.
At about 8:49 a.m., three cars traveling north on the expressway pulled over near the 95th Street Red Line station, with two of the vehicles boxed in the third, according to witnesses. Occupants of all three vehicles then engaged in a shootout, Chicago police said, and a bullet from one of the guns reportedly flew through the glass of the operator’s train car.
In an official statement, CPD did not identify the victim as a train operator, saying only that “a 46-year-old male victim was traveling aboard the train when he was struck by a piece of glass in the face and body.” However, officers who responded to the scene repeatedly identified the victim on their radios as the train’s operator. He was taken to Trinity Hospital in good condition.
All three vehicles involved in the shootout fled the scene, police said, and no other injuries have been reported. Officers at the train station took a woman into custody, but CPD did not reveal why she was arrested.
