FBI seeks more victims of Aurora school board member charged with child sexual abuse

Michael Herbert (Aurora Police Department)

The FBI is expanding an investigation into a suburban school board member accused of sexually abusing a boy for years, saying investigators believe there may be additional victims who have not yet come forward.

The agency on Monday announced it hopes to locate anyone who may have been victimized by Michael Robert Herbert, 55, of Aurora, who served on the school board of Aurora Christian Schools. Investigators said they believe Herbert primarily targeted boys between 2013 and 2022.

The investigation of Herbert began in December 2025, when a man in his 20s reported to Aurora police that he had been sexually abused as a young teenager. Prosecutors say Herbert used a position of trust within the Aurora community to groom and abuse the victim over several years across multiple jurisdictions, allegedly providing gifts, money, and other incentives as part of an ongoing pattern of manipulation.

Last month, Kane County officials charged Herbert with involuntary sexual servitude of a minor, criminal sexual assault of a minor, and multiple related felonies.

As the investigation progressed, police said they developed information suggesting Herbert may have had similar contact with other juvenile male victims, based on evidence gathered during the investigation and reports made to other law enforcement agencies.

Anyone who believes Herbert may have victimized them or their child, or who has information relevant to the investigation, is asked to visit fbi.gov/LetYourVoiceBeHeard. The FBI said responses are confidential and agents may follow up to gather additional information.
