Man found shot, slashed in burning South Loop apartment dies

Chicago police detectives have launched a death investigation after a man was found shot, slashed, and suffering from smoke inhalation inside a burning South Loop apartment on Wednesday evening.

Chicago firefighters responded to a fire in a second-floor apartment in the 1300 block of South Wabash Avenue at about 5 p.m. Upon entering the unit, they discovered a 33-year-old man and summoned police after finding a firearm and realizing the victim had been shot, according to a preliminary police report.

Further investigation revealed the man also suffered a laceration to his neck and smoke inhalation, according to a CPD media statement. He was transported to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he later died.

Detectives spent Wednesday night recovering surveillance video and other evidence from the building as they worked to determine what led to the man’s death. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office is expected to conduct an autopsy on Thursday.
