Man who got 1 year in CTA ‘busjacking’ incident now gets 3 years for mugging Red Line passenger (He’s already out)

Maurice Lowry made headlines in 2021 for supposedly “busjacking” a CTA bus, then received a one-year gun possession sentence. Now he’s pleaded guilty to robbing a man on the Red Line. But, thanks to the state’s 50% sentence reduction law and credits earned in jail, he won’t have to worry about living in an actual prison this time, either.

Carjackers arrested while trying to sell stolen car back to victims, CPD says

A pair of alleged carjackers are being held in the Cook County jail after prosecutors said they made a spectacularly bad decision: trying to sell the hijacked car back to its owner just hours after taking it at gunpoint. Their plan unraveled when Chicago police squad cars happened to drive past as the cash-for-car exchange was underway and the victim decided to flag down the cops rather than pay money for his own car.

Man who flipped off CTA camera during Red Line robbery gets 16-year prison sentence

After five people robbed a woman on a Red Line train in September 2024, Chicago police released CTA surveillance images of the suspects and asked the public for help identifying them. In one photo, one of the robbers looked directly into the camera and defiantly extended his middle finger toward the lens. Now, the bird-flipping robber is flying away to prison with a 16-year sentence.

Venezuelan gangsters beat man to death after kidnapping him from Chicago park — then called his mom to tell her where the body was: prosecutors

Federal officials say three Tren de Aragua gang members kidnapped an 18-year-old man from a South Side park this spring, beat him to death, shot his body multiple times, and then called his mother from Venezuela to tell her where she could find the body. Only two of the accused men have been publicly identified, but records show they were both supposed to be on court-ordered electronic monitoring at the time of the murder.
