CHICAGO — A food service delivery driver was shot as he stood outside a homeless camp just west of the Loop on Saturday morning. No arrests have been made.
Chicago police said the 24-year-old was standing near a gas station in the 1000 block of South Desplaines when someone fired shots, striking him in the buttocks around 1:50 a.m. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in fair condition.
A major homeless encampment has stretched along the west side of Desplaines Street in the area for years. Overnight, police and an evidence technician worked inside the camp, where several shell casings had been found. Bullets also struck the victim’s car.
On July 5, a shooting at the homeless camp left one man dead and another seriously injured.
In May 2020, a man was shot and killed at the BP station, 1004 South Desplaines, just a few steps from where this morning’s shooting occurred.
