CHICAGO — A Chicago man smiled broadly for his mugshot as prosecutors charged him with murdering a man in the West Loop last month. Ashanti Randolph, 29, was detained by Judge Caroline Glennon-Goodman during a hearing at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse at 26th and California.
Shortly after the September 1 shooting, CPD said a gunman fired shots from a car toward three people standing in the 1000 block of West Lake at 1:19 a.m. A bullet struck 34-year-old Travis Bailey in the head and he died from his injuries.
Officials said Bailey and the other two people near him were unarmed at the time of the shooting.
Judge Glennon-Goodman’s detention order said Randolph was seen on video getting out of the shooter’s car wearing a Hellstar t-shirt. License plate readers put Randolph’s black Audi in the area of the shooting at the time of the murder, the judge wrote. Witnesses identified Randolph in video stills.
He is charged with first-degree murder and aggravated assault by discharging a firearm.
