Prosecutors have revealed new details about the man charged with raping two women and committing residential burglaries on the North Side in recent months, including the fact that Chicago police officers had the accused man under surveillance when he committed the most recent sexual assault. Judge Rivanda Doss Beal detained 19-year-old Tymarion Averhart after hearing about the allegations during a detention hearing at 26th and California on Sunday.
Chicago cops arrested Averyhart on Thursday night, minutes after a 21-year-old woman was sexually assaulted in Rogers Park.
Averyhart made online arrangements with an escort to meet him in the 1800 block of West Lunt that evening, but officials said he ultimately met with the escort’s friend. According to prosecutors, he put a knife to the woman’s throat, put a t-shirt over her eyes, and forced her to undress. He then sexually assaulted her and refused to pay the $400 as promised, prosecutors stated.
Cops were able to arrest Averyhart quickly because CPD already had him under surveillance. While the officers saw him meet with the victim on Thursday, they did not see the rape occur, prosecutors said.
When officers arrested him in the 1800 block of West Greenleaf, Averyhart allegedly had an identification and Social Security card belonging to a woman whose apartment was burglarized in the 6200 block of North Bell at Christmastime.
The other sexual assault he is accused of committing occurred in the same residential building as the burglary.
Around 1 a.m. on December 26, that victim woke up to Averyhart bending over her bed, dressed entirely in black and wearing a face mask, prosecutors said. He foiled the woman’s escape attempts, raped her, and stole her gaming console and other items, prosecutors alleged.
DNA tests linked Averyhart to the December sexual assault.
Two weeks later, on January 10, the woman whose apartment was burglarized at Christmastime found that someone had been in her unit again, officials said. She found empty drink cans, a used condom, and other items that also bore Averyhart’s DNA.
Averyhart, who has no previous criminal convictions, is charged with two counts of aggravated criminal sexual assault, committing a sex offense during a home invasion, aggravated armed kidnapping, aggravated unlawful restraint, and three counts of residential burglary.
