A man has been charged with burglarizing a Chicago church after police released surveillance images and video footage and asked the public to help identify him.

Mohammad Ahmad, 27, of Burbank, was arrested Sunday after investigators connected him to a mid-July break-in at St. Bede & St. Denis Parish, 8200 South Kostner Avenue.

According to a Chicago police report, Ahmad was identified from security footage as the man who used a tool to pry compromise a locked door on July 11 or 12. Once inside, he allegedly bent over a donation box and used the same tool to force it open, stealing about $300 in cash.

Last month, CPD released still images and a short video clip showing the burglar at work. The video depicted a man with a screwdriver in his hand leaning over the box and reaching toward it with a tool. Detectives asked the public to help put a name to the face.

Ahmad now faces a charge of burglary of a place of worship. Judge Susana Ortiz ordered him released on electronic monitoring while the case is pending.

Court records show Ahmad is no stranger to burglary cases. In 2021, he received a sentence of two years’ probation for a residential burglary in Summit.
