For the sixth time in his life, an Addison man is charged with DUI after police allegedly found him slumped over the wheel of his car at a busy intersection with a blood alcohol concentration nearly four times the legal limit.
Goran Brkic, 56, was ordered detained by Judge Joshua Dieden on a count of aggravated DUI – sixth or subsequent violation, a Class X felony, officials said.
According to prosecutors, Addison police officers responded to a report of a driver slumped over the wheel at Lake Street and Mill Road around 11:27 a.m. Tuesday. They found Brkic’s vehicle sitting in the left turn lane on westbound Lake Street and positioned squad cars in front of and behind the vehicle to keep it from moving, according to a statement from the DuPage County State’s Attorney’s Office.
When officers made contact with Brkic, he was so disoriented that he couldn’t even put his car into park, the statement said. Officers put the vehicle in park and removed his seatbelt for him, at which point they allegedly detected an odor of alcohol.
A breath test allegedly showed a BAC of .301, nearly four times the legal limit of .08.
“Time after time, Mr. Brkic thumbed his nose at the law,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said. “He continued to get behind the wheel of his car not only after his first or second DUI, but as alleged in this case, after his fifth. What I find particularly disturbing in this case is the allegation that the defendant had a BAC of .301 while driving on an extremely busy road at 11:30 in the morning.”
Addison Police Chief Roy Selvik said Brkic “has made a career out of gambling with innocent lives on the roadway.”
If convicted, Brkic faces a prison sentence of between six and 30 years.
