Prosecutors have charged an Uptown man with murdering a neighborhood condo board president who was reportedly trying to escort him out of a residential complex where his presence violated a recently issued protective order.
Jonathan Wilson, 38, was shot by Chicago police officers after he raised a firearm toward officers who were chasing him down a nearby side street, according to CPD. Wilson survived and remained hospitalized on Wednesday night. Police have not released the victim’s name because his next of kin had not yet been notified, so CWB Chicago is withholding it for now.
Officers arrested Wilson at the condo building in the 4800 block of North Clark Street just after noon last Wednesday, June 10, after a woman reported that her intoxicated boyfriend was tearing up her apartment and throwing items off the balcony, police said. He appeared in court the following day on non-detainable misdemeanor charges of assault and criminal damage to property. Judge Lisette Mojica released him after he was served with a protective order, according to court records.
“There are lots of first-hand witnesses to his crazy behavior around here, going back to last winter,” a resident told CWB Chicago, describing what the resident called “some crazy, psychopathic behavior” from Wilson in recent weeks.
Wilson returned to the property around 8:15 p.m. Monday in violation of that order, officials said. The 63-year-old condo board president reportedly sent a group text warning fellow board members that Wilson was in the area, then walked over to try to persuade him to leave, according to a source familiar with the matter. A witness told CWB Chicago it appeared Wilson shot the board president in the back as he tried to run away, then fired two more times after he was on the ground.
Police responding to a call of a person shot found the board president in a driveway next to the condo building with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he died.
Other officers located Wilson in the 1400 block of West Argyle Street. CPD said in a statement that a brief foot pursuit followed, and Wilson turned and raised his firearm toward officers, who opened fire and struck him. Three officers were taken to Swedish Hospital to be checked out after the shooting, but none were shot or seriously hurt, according to CPD.
Residents of the condo complex said they were told the board president had been working with management and attorneys on Sunday to prepare a notice about the domestic situation and Wilson’s restraining order, but the final version had not been approved by the time Wilson returned Monday night.
Wilson is charged with first-degree murder, being a felon in possession of a weapon, three counts of aggravated assault of a peace officer, and aggravatred possession of a weapon. He is scheduled for a detention hearing on Thursday. If he remains hospitalized, officials said the hearing will be rescheduled and he will stay in custody until he is physically able to appear before a judge.
COPA, the Civilian Office of Police Accountability, is investigating the officers’ use of force against Wilson to determine whether it complied with department policy. All officers involved in the shooting will be placed on routine administrative duty for at least 30 days, per CPD policy.
