A Venezuelan man was sentenced to five years in prison Thursday for robbing an 85-year-old woman in the Gold Coast, stealing a necklace from another woman in the Loop, and burglarizing a man’s pickup truck in Boystown, according to court records. But he took time to tell the judge that he is a “political prisoner” back home.

Men packed 750 pounds of stimulant into 12 suitcases on flight to O’Hare, prosecutors say

Two men accused of smuggling over 750 pounds of the illegal stimulant “khat” into the United States by packing the stimulant into a dozen checked suitcases and bringing them on a flight from Africa to O’Hare International Airport, according to a state criminal complaint. Prosecutors said the substance cathinone, commonly known as khat, has “no acceptable medical use” and presents “a high degree of addiction.”
