#30: Man, on bond for gun case, shot woman 10 times in her back, prosecutors say

A Chicago man was charged Thursday with shooting a woman ten times in her back while he was on bond for felony charges of gun possession and battering police. Karon Brunt, 31, is now the 30th person accused of killing, trying to kill, or shooting someone in Chicago this year while awaiting trial for another felony.

Prosecutors said the alleged victim, a 28-year-old woman, was hanging out with friends on the 7300 block of South Prairie when Brunt joined them and began talking with her around 1:30 a.m. on May 23.

The woman noticed a gun in Brunt’s waistband and decided to walk back to her car, Assistant State’s Attorney Gail Bembnister said. As she got into the vehicle, Brunt pulled out the weapon and shot her ten times in the back, according to Bembnister.

Bullets allegedly struck the woman in her thigh, buttocks, back, and spine. She was transported to the University of Chicago Hospital in critical condition.

The woman later identified Brunt in a photo line-up, Bembnister said. A fugitive task force arrested him Wednesday.

Zaid Abdallah, Brunt’s private defense attorney, said he works in construction, lives with his fiancee, and has five kids with one on the way.

Prosecutors said Brunt has previous felony convictions for guns and narcotics. And he has those pending felonies that he was on bond for at the time of the alleged shooting.

In that case, police who stopped Brunt’s car on the 100 block of South State on June 30, 2020, allegedly discovered that he was driving on a suspended license. Police said Brunt was carrying a loaded handgun when he tried to escape from them during the stop. Prosecutors charged him with unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, two counts of felony aggravated battery of police, and two counts of resisting. He posted $1,000 to get out of jail.

After hearing the new allegations on Thursday, Judge Arthur Willis ordered Brunt held without bail on a charge of aggravated battery by discharge of a firearm. Willis also ordered Brunt held without bail for violating the terms of bond in the pending case.
